Atlantic salmon

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is an iconic species, renowned as a food fish and highly prized by sports fishermen. While wild stocks were once an abundant resource throughout the North Atlantic, the vast majority of current consumption (99%) comprises farmed salmon.

This leaflet gives an overview of established scientific knowledge on the species, focusing in particular on aquaculture production and interactions between domesticated and wild salmon.

'At a glance' presents a brief overview of the scope of this review whereas 'In depth information' provides a more detailed description of the distribution, biology, and commercial production of Atlantic salmon, in addition to the genetic introgression between wild and farmed conspecifics.
